This phrase is based on the words spoken by a man called Victor von Hase. He was a law student in Heidelberg, who had to answer in front of a court in 1855. He apparently helped a friend escape because the friend shot a student in a pistol duel. As Victor stood in front of the court and was asked about the case, he answered "Mein Name ist Hase, ich weiß von nichts" (my name is Hase, I don't know anything). These words were spread around, and in the end it became a catchphrase.
